The Utah Legislature has cleared a bill that ends mandatory vehicle safety inspections. In return, the senate increased registration fees by $1 and made wearing a seatbelt a permanent primary offense. However, this bill does not go into effect until January 2018.
Vehicle safety inspections can prevent vehicle failure on the highways and crashes that may result in injuries or death. Some of the things that are checked within a safety inspection include:
1. Check for impaired visibility through windshield.
2. Check for adequate visibility from required mirrors.
3. Check seat belts for proper operation.
4. Check for looseness in steering.
5. Check for play in brake pedal.
6. Check emergency brake for proper operation.
7. Check horn. Horn must be audible at 200 feet.
8. Check windshield wiper / washer operations.
9. Check heater/defroster operation.
There are many more procedures that are checked in each inspection to ensure safety for the driver in the car, as well as other drivers on the road.
As the bill was cleared, the Senate in return raised all registration fees by $1. This extra dollar will be used to expand the Utah Highway Patrol. Allowing the Highway Patrol to hire new troopers, as well as pay overtime for the troopers.
The bill also entails the detail that wearing a seatbelt is now a permanent primary offense.
Be sure to buckle up, and as always, be cautious while driving for increased safety.
