By the time of your passing, the government will already have taken thousands – and perhaps even millions – from your hard-earned wealth. You’re probably not in love with that reality, although you prefer it over going to prison for tax evasion.

But do you know what’s worse than the government taking your wealth away from you? When it takes it away from your surviving family members, and anyone else you care for enough to deem a beneficiary.

5 Powerful Strategies to Reduce Estate Taxes in Utah

Do you want to minimize the estate taxes your beneficiaries have to pay? Good. There are many ways to, and they aren’t mutually exclusive of one another. A sound estate plan may include any of the following.

  1. Family Limited Partnership – Does your family have business interests? Setting up a limited partnership (or limited liability company) could ultimately yield multiple financial advantages, including assured continuity of business ownership and reduced income tax.
  2. Gift Tax Exclusion – You or your spouse may give tax-free gifts to anyone you want. In 2025, an individual is allowed to gift up to $19,000 per recipient without incurring a gift tax.
  3. Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust (ILIT) – When you create an ILIT, you set up a trust as the owner of your life insurance policy. An ILIT gives you some control over how assets from your insurance policies will be used after your death, and can also shield your beneficiaries from estate taxes.
  4. Marital Transfer – Is your spouse a United States citizen? Then you can transfer an unlimited amount of money to them without penalty or tax. The marital transfer tax exemption can apply to your entire estate in the event of your passing. In that case, your estate would only be taxed after your spouse’s passing.
  5. Marital Trust – In 2025, a decedent can transfer assets with a market value of up to $13.99 million before incurring federal estate tax. Either an A/B or QTIP trust will allow you to leverage that exemption (which is nearly certain to increase with each coming year) to its fullest extent.
