Governor Appoints Brian G. Cannell to the First Judicial District

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert has appointed Brian G. Cannell to fill a vacancy on the First District Court bench.

“Brian obtained a wealth of knowledge while practicing law within Utah’s private sector,” said Governor Herbert. “I have no doubt that he will make an exceptional addition to the bench.”

”I am honored by Governor Herbert’s selection of me to serve as a District Court Judge in the First District,” said Cannell. “I am likewise humbled by his trust in me and the public support I have received throughout the selection process, and vow to be a diligent steward of justice.”

Cannell was admitted to the Utah Bar in 1996. He began practicing law as an associate attorney at Hillyard, Anderson and Olsen, P.C. in 1996 and became a shareholder in 1999. Over the course of his career he was responsible for a wide variety of cases involving civil litigation, business law, municipal law, adoption, parental rights, land use, estate planning, among others. Cannell has also taught Mass Media Law as an adjunct professor at Utah State University.

In addition to his professional experience, Cannell has served on a variety of boards and committees throughout Cache County. He has provided pro-bono legal services to non-profit organizations such as: Utah Festival Opera Company, Willow Park Zoo Foundation, Bridgerland Applied Technology College Foundation, North Logan Parks Committee, Sunshine Terrace Foundation and Logan Rotary Club.

Cannell received a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center, graduating cum laude. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Utah State University, graduating magna cum laude.

Cannell is filling a vacancy left by Judge Clint Judkins who retired after 24 years on the bench. Judicial appointments are subject to confirmation by the Utah State Senate.
